THEY ARE THE LAST

34 degrees 24 minutes 19 seconds South,

53 degrees, 46 minutes 40 seconds West.

Leonardo Da Costa is a lighthouse keeper stationed in Cabo Polonio, a remote cape in a stretch of Uruguayan coastline rich in shipwrecks and sunken treasures.

Cabo Polonio’s light has been guiding ships since 1881, and Da Costa is the latest in a long line of watchmen who have operated the tower with care and attention. He leads an unassuming life, the tranquility of the almost intact landscape keeping him company. Serenity and silence merge with the daily tasks and chores he carries out. Da Costa represents a rare profession that still endures in a few countries.

Take some time to appreciate a gentle and enlightening way of life, for once it is gone, it will be missed.

SKETCH!

"Sketching has a sense of urgency that I love, the energy, the life that can come out of a sketch amazes me. It’s about spontaneity, enthusiasm, confidence. It’s giving the feeling of a place, the illusion that every element is here."

Stéphane Kardos loves sketching around L.A. He is fascinated by the urban landscape that the city has to offer. The abstract pattern of its electric poles and wires, the road signs and vehicles, the people, the Southern Californian light and colours.... The uniqueness of the city is of constant inspiration to him.

As a sketch artist, Stéphane wants his drawings to capture the essence of the subjects - the loose lines and the casual, quick approach add to creating life in the drawing. He wants to provide a feeling of the location by intentionally not giving all the details away, yet everything is there... Sketching makes him feel at home, and his work radiates the pleasure he obtains from going out and drawing all those scenes that inspire him.

Stéphane shares his amazing talent as he takes us on a personal visual tour of the districts of Silver Lake and Los Feliz.

ALMA

Etienne Bellanger always wanted to be a luthier. At a young age he spent time in a luthier workshop, where he became instantly fascinated and hooked, and ended up submerging deeper into this world.

He studied to be a luthier at the prestigious National School of Lutherie of Mirecourt and settled in Zaragoza in 2009 with the aim of developing his professional career. Lutherie of bowed instruments is almost non-existent in Spain, and Etienne, who provides a breath of fresh air in a city with practically no tradition in this art, welcomes us into his workshop to share his thoughts on music and his craft.

*Honorable Mention at the I Digital Photograph Audiovisual Contest Tritón.

"Beautiful Spanish short about a violin maker, craft, and passion."
Sir Ken Robinson

"Kauri Multimedia beautifies visual storytelling with Alma.”

THE BANK

In Spain, around 20% of the population live below the rate of relative poverty. The Spanish Food Bank Foundation assists those hardest hit by collecting excess food and distributing to agencies and community action groups. The photofilm shows the work carried out by the Aragón Food Bank and introduces viewers to the volunteers working there, mostly early-retired and retired old people. Pivotal in the running of the Foundation, they are examples of altruism, hard work and goodwill in times of increasing hardship in a competitive and excluding society such as todays.
